Petterino Gattinara is a distinguished wine from the small, under-the-radar producer Marco Petterino, who operates in the prestigious DOCG of Gattinara in northern Piedmont. With only 2½ hectares of southwest-facing vineyards spread across top crus like Permolone, Castelle, and Guardie, Petterino's production is highly limited, yielding just about 1,300 cases annually. The vineyards sit on soils rich in granites, quartz, and ferrous minerals, imparting a distinct minerality to the wine. Petterino’s winemaking is traditional, with hand-harvested grapes, a 15-day fermentation, and aging in large botti for three years, followed by six months in stainless steel. Released 9-10 years after harvest, Petterino Gattinara showcases the elegant, aromatic side of Nebbiolo with notes of florals, iron, anise, and berries, offering both immediate approachability and significant aging potential.
