The first commercial winery in the state was established in 1847, and by the late 1800s, Missouri was producing more than one million gallons of wine each year. The industry continued to grow until Prohibition in the 1920s, when it was nearly wiped out. After Prohibition, the industry slowly began to rebuild, and today there are more than 100 wineries in the state.
