Château Haut-Brion is located in the Bordeaux sub-region of Pessac-Léognan and has been producing wine for over 500 years. The wines have been highly regarded for almost as long with London diarist Samuel Pepys mentioning the wine in his records. The estate holds the rare distinction of being named a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The wine is a blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon. Selection is severe with only the highest quality fruit making it to the Grand Vin. Current production volumes are less than half of what they were in the 1990s due to the severity of selection. Long aging is another hallmark of Haut Brion. Celebrated cooperage Seguin-Moreau has established a cooperage on-site to meet the requirements for oak barrels with the Grand Vin spending up to 24 months in at least 70% new, French oak barrels depending on the vintage. The wines are full-bodied and concentrated with flavors of ripe red and black fruits, earthy undertones, and subtle notes of oak and spice. The tannins are well integrated and the wines have good acidity and a long, lingering finish. These wines can be enjoyed now, but also have great aging potential. In a similar way that the sprawling city of Bordeaux now surrounds the estate, Haut Brion is part of the fabric of France and is a must-try should the opportunity be available.

Château Mouton Rothschild Pauillac is a prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classé estate located in the renowned Pauillac appellation in Bordeaux, France. Its exceptional Grand Vin is produced from a blend that is usually at least 75% Cabernet Sauvignon supported by Merlot and occasionally Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot depending on the vintage. Mouton Rothschild was the first estate in Bordeaux to bottle their own wines, such is their commitment to quality including long aging in a high proportion of new, French, oak barrels to add complexity and begin the process of softening the immense tannic structure. The resulting wine is known for its opulence, elegance, and rich flavors, with notes of blackcurrant, cedar, and tobacco. The wine is also famous for its artist-designed labels which have changed every vintage since 1945. Try this wine to see for yourself why its promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé remains the only change ever made within the 1855 Classification of the Medoc.
