Wine tannin gives wine its textural mouthfeel and astringency. Tannin is a natural compound found in grape skins, seeds, and stems. It contributes to the structure and helps to balance out the sweetness of the fruit. Yves Gras' Gigondas is likely the most concentrated in the appellation. His old vines (averaging over 50 years old), coupled with a very late harvest, make this possible. Intense, bold, herbal, and wonderfully complex for the region. Only in very exceptional years does the Domaine produce an additional Cuvee des Hautes Garrigues. This Gigondas undoubtedly ranks among the world's best wines: extreme concentration beautifully combines with intense, refined fruit notes. The masses of tannins are perfectly rounded and civilized. The plots for this cuvée are planted with vines over 80 years old, yielding only 15 hectoliters per hectare. Noteworthy is the exceptionally good Côtes du Rhône, the benchmark in this price range.
