The castle, built in 1441 by the Tricerchi family, remains the heart of the property, now owned by the Squarcia family. This wine embodies the region's best, benefitting from well-drained soils and perfect sun exposure. Traditional winemaking techniques, including extended maceration and oak aging, result in a rich and complex profile with ripe red fruits, earthy notes, and a velvety texture. Tenuta di Sesta Brunello di Montalcino is a full bodied, dry, red wine from Tuscany based on the Sangiovese grape. Brunello, the local version of Sangiovese, produces a smaller grape with thicker skins resulting in a more concentrated and structured style than the wines of Chianti to the north, while the warmer climate results in a darker fruit expression. The estate is family owned with several generations involved in production. The winemaking involved hand harvesting, and long maturation in larger, older oak vessels. The wine spends a minimum of 30 months in oak followed by at least 6 months in bottle before release. Expect notes of black cherry, prune, and dried herbs. This full bodied wine has bright acidity and abundant grainy tannins that are just starting to show signs of resolution from the maturation before release. This wine can be drunk now, best with food, but it will develop tobacco and leather complexity with further cellaring. This will make a fine addition to any cellar and a great gift for regular wine drinkers who are captivated by Italian culture.
