Wine Description:
Lenz Winery's Old Vines Merlot is produced by Lenz Winery in Long Island's North Fork region. When the winery was established there were fewer than 10 wineries in the region. Lenz has been focused on doing as allowing their unique climate to shape the expression of classic grape varieties. The Merlot grapes are sourced from the estate's oldest vines, planted in the 1980s. which are carefully tended to produce low yields of intensely flavored fruit. The resulting wine is well balanced, with notes of dark fruit, spice, and a hint of oak matched by a generous body, and firm claylike tannins. This wine is suitable for anyone looking for wine made from established varieties from unique locations.
Pros:
  • Rich and complex flavors featuring ripe dark fruit, chocolate, cedar, and spice

Wine Expert Note:

With plummy fruit on the nose, a medium-bodied palate with claylike tannins, and fresh acidity that shows subtle oak sweet spice complexity on the moderate finish this ripe style of cooler climate Merlot owes it concentration to the low-yielding old vines. Serve it with a rosemary skewered rack of lamb and garlic roast potatoes. Drink now or over the next 10 years.

Matthews Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a testament to the rich tapestry of Washington State's terroirs. Crafted from select vineyard parcels across the Columbia Valley, including esteemed sites in Horse Heaven Hills, Red Mountain, and Royal Slope AVA’s, notably the Conner Lee vineyard, this wine embodies the essence of the region. Under the stewardship of a new winemaking team, vineyard practices were refined to reduce yields by 30%, yielding small, concentrated berries. Harvested meticulously by hand over a period of weeks, the grapes undergo a meticulous process upon arrival at the winery, including hand-sorting and cold soaking. Following a 14-day fermentation and extended maceration, the wine is aged for 19 months in a blend of new and used French oak, resulting in a bold yet elegantly integrated Cabernet Sauvignon with a complex flavor profile and refined tannins.
