Wine Description:
Joiseph Mischkultur Gemischter Satz trocken is a the result of a collaboration between three friends that started with the 2015 vintage and has grown from a tiny hectare to nearly five hectares. ‘Mischkultur’ means a ‘mix of cultures’ and represents both the biodiversity in these particular vineyards as well as the diverse group of people that take part and help in the Joiseph project. The Gemischter Satz trocken is a field blend, consisting of six grape varietals cultivated in the same vineyard. A super old vine (70-100 year old) field blend of Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Muscat Ottonel, Neuburger, Traminer, and Muller Thurgau. The grapes were destemmed and were fermented in steel (all varieties co-fermented) with just under two days of skin contact. After pressing, 2/3 of the wine went into one old 2500L barrel whilst the rest went into steel tanks. All the wine aged for 12 months, saw some occasional battonage, and was bottled with a tiny sulphite addition. The wine is unfined and unfiltered. Only about 1,500 liters were made.

Wine Expert Note:

Joiseph Mischkultur Gemischter Satz trocken is a dry white wine produced in the Joiseph region. This wine is made using the traditional Austrian winemaking technique called "Gemischter Satz," which involves blending different grape varieties grown together in the same vineyard. On the nose, Joiseph Mischkultur Gemischter Satz trocken offers a vibrant bouquet of citrus fruits, including lemon and grapefruit, accompanied by subtle floral notes. The palate is crisp and refreshing, with a lively acidity that balances the fruitiness of the wine. Flavors of green apple, pear, and white peach are prominent, adding complexity and depth to the overall profile. The wine exhibits a medium body and a well-rounded mouthfeel. The finish is loaded with notes of citrus and stone fruits, and held together by a delicate tannic bite and fresh acidity.

The fruit, hand-harvested and triple sorted (in the vineyard, before, and after destemming), was primarily whole berries gravity-fed into stainless steel fermenters. To concentrate the juice for red fermentations, approximately 20% of the juice was bled from the tanks after 24-48 hours and used for rosé. Fermentations were conducted separately by variety and clone, with daily pump overs and manual punch downs for maximum extraction of color, aroma, and flavor. After 8-10 days of fermentation and 7-14 days of post-fermentation maceration, the young wines were pressed and aged in French oak barrels for 12-15 months, completing malolactic fermentation in barrel.
