Wine Description:
Domaine Olga Raffault's Les Picasses Chinon is a standout example of the potential of the Cabernet Franc grape in the Loire Valley. The wine hails from the Les Picasses vineyard, one of the most revered sites in the Chinon appellation, known for its exceptional terroir featuring clay-limestone soils over a limestone base. This family-run estate, overseen for decades by Olga Raffault and now by her descendants, employs traditional viticulture methods and is committed to organic farming practices. The wine is fermented using native yeasts and aged in old oak barrels, preserving the natural expression of the fruit and terroir. The resulting Chinon is both robust and elegant, with a complex bouquet of dark fruits, bell pepper, and earthy undertones. Its firm tannins and balanced acidity provide excellent aging potential, though the wine is also approachable in its youth. Read more

Wine Expert Note:

On the nose, Domaine Olga Raffault Les Picasses Chinon offers an enticing bouquet of ripe red fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, accompanied by subtle floral notes. There is also a hint of earthiness, adding complexity to the aromatic profile. The palate is equally impressive, with a medium-bodied structure and well-integrated tannins. The flavors of red fruits persist, complemented by savory undertones of herbs and spices. The wine displays a good balance between fruitiness and acidity, resulting in a refreshing and vibrant character. Domaine Olga Raffault Les Picasses Chinon is known for its excellent aging potential. With proper cellaring, this wine can develop further complexity and evolve into a more nuanced and refined expression of Chinon. It pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes, including roasted meats, game, and aged cheeses. Read more

Mee Godard is an Asian-American who studied winemaking in both the USA and France. A fan of the Beaujolais region, she took over the estate of a local winemaker who retired without an hier. Le Grand Cras is one of three Morgon climats that Godard farms. Her appraoch to viticulture is conventional with low level use of synthetics where possible. Vinification is about gentle extraction and the greation of ageworthy wines with structure from the use of whole bunches and maturation in old wood. The Grand Cras is black fruit with subtle peony lfit, and generous body with silkty tannins and a lean acidiy that blances the ripeness of the fruit. This is a great choice for those who seek astisinal-style Beaujolais.
