Wine tannin gives wine its textural mouthfeel and astringency. Tannin is a natural compound found in grape skins, seeds, and stems. It contributes to the structure and helps to balance out the sweetness of the fruit. Winemaker Dirk van der Niepoort dubs it the "little brother" of his Vintage Ports. Why? Because it shares its origin with grapes from the same areas within the estate in the Cima Corgo region, Vale de Mendiz. These over seventy-year-old vines yield limited fruit with highly expressive aromas. The winemaking process mirrors that of its counterpart. Grapes are meticulously handpicked, then traditionally foot-trodden in Lagares. The wine matures in large wooden barrels known as "balseiros" in Gaia. Niepoort bottles their LBV four to six years after harvest, resulting in a truly exceptional wine with a character all its own.
