Wine tannin gives wine its textural mouthfeel and astringency. Tannin is a natural compound found in grape skins, seeds, and stems. It contributes to the structure and helps to balance out the sweetness of the fruit. Tannins are usually discussed when it comes to red wines, even though some white and rosé wines with certain wine making techniques can also contain tannins.

Château Potensac Médoc is a benchmark of the Medoc. Whilst it has withdrawn from the current version of the classification, Potensac was one of the original Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel and the only one from the Medoc appellation. Whilst still a classic French Bordeaux blend made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, the wine is now Merlot dominant. This is due to the amount of clay and limestone soil on the property which is similar to that found on the escarpment in St Emilion. Along with Leoville Las Cases and Nenin, Chateau Potensac has belonged to the Delon family for generations, with the help of the ever-present Michel Rolland. This is reflected in the winemaking where the barrels come used from Clos du Maquis and the wine is aged for 16-18 months depending on the vintage. This wine ages well, developing notes of cigar box, and is a great introduction to Bordeaux.
