Castello Nipozzano dates back to the year 1000 as an ancient defensive stronghold of Florence close to the Tuscan Apennines, and it belongs to the Frescobaldi family. The first documentation regarding wines from the estate dates from the Renaissance, when artists Donatello and Michelozzo Michelozzi regularly purchased wine there. In 1855, an ancestor of the Frescobaldi family invested 1,000 florins to begin cultivating grape varieties previously unknown in Tuscany.

The castle is situated in the Chianti Rùfina territory on a mountain slope overlooking the Arno river valley. Castello Nipozzano and Castello Pomino were the first estates in Tuscany to receive PEFC certification, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, which guarantees sustainable forest management. Its wines include Mormoreto and Nipozzano Riserva.
