Bodegas Protos was founded in 1927, and its wines from 1927 and 1928 won a gold medal at the 1929 Barcelona Universal Exposition. In 1970, Protos began construction of an aging cellar with over two kilometers of underground galleries beneath the mountain holding the castle. In 1986, the winery acquired a production winery surrounded by old vineyards in Anguix (Burgos).

Protos controls 1,400 hectares across Ribera del Duero in the provinces of Valladolid, Burgos, Soria, and Segovia. Its wines there are made from 100% Tempranillo, and its plantings are 60% trellis-trained and 40% bush-trained. Harvesting is completely manual, using 20 kg boxes for grapes from old vines. In Rueda, Protos has 177 hectares of vineyards at altitudes between 700 and 800 meters above sea level. Its Rueda wines are made from 100% Verdejo and include Protos Verdejo.
On VinoVoss, Protos has 5 wines in stock: 5 red. Their average rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 625 ratings.
