Trent Jackson picked the first JAX grapes in 1995. In 1996, brother and sister Trent and Kimberly Jackson collaborated with their vintner father to found their first label. Co-founder and owner Kimberly Jackson Wickam took over the business in 2003. Production expanded from 200 cases to 22,000 cases. In 2013, Dan Parrott was recruited as a third partner.

The family vineyard sits on the west side of the property and features volcanic alluvial soil due to its proximity to Mt. St. Helena. Winemaker Kirk Venge was recruited to create balanced wines reflecting varietal character and a sense of place, and has worked with the vineyards since 2003. Grapes grown include Cabernet Sauvignon (clone 337, rootstock 101-14), Cabernet Franc (clone 332, rootstock 101-14), and Petit Verdot (clone 3, rootstock 101-14).
