In 1875, founders Jacob and Frederick Beringer purchased 215 acres in St. Helena, overseeing their first harvest and crush in 1876. Beringer operated during Prohibition under a federal license to produce sacramental wine and was the first winery to offer public tours in 1934. Beringer Winery was named a State Historic Landmark in 1967, and Nestle S.A. of Switzerland bought the winery in 1970. The Rhine House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Winemakers have included Ed Sbragia and Laurie Hook.

The Old Winery was built against a hillside to use gravity flow methods, and Chinese immigrant workers hand-chiseled 1,200 linear feet of aging tunnels in Spring Mountain from the late 1870s to early 1880s. In 1977, Beringer began fermenting Chardonnay and Cabernet in French oak barrels. All owned and leased vineyards are certified sustainable by third parties. Its wines include Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
On VinoVoss, Beringer has 11 wines in stock: 6 red, 4 white, 1 fortified. Their average rating is 3.9 out of 5 from 4,353 ratings.
