Dan and Margaret Duckhorn founded Duckhorn Vineyards in 1976, and Tom Rinaldi was the founding winemaker. The first harvest yielded 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Three Palms Vineyard Merlot. Duckhorn produced its first vintage of Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc in 1982 and its first Howell Mountain appellation-designated wine in 1989. In 2014, Renée Ary was named the fourth winemaker in Duckhorn's history, and the winery acquired Three Palms Vineyard in 2015.

Dan and Margaret Duckhorn purchased the original 10-acre Marlee's Vineyard in St. Helena. Vineyard acquisitions in Napa Valley included 40 acres of El Veredicto in Los Carneros and 10 acres of Red Wing in St. Helena. The estate vineyard program encompasses 298 acres in Napa Valley across five sub-appellations. Winemaking includes hundreds of small fermentations each vintage, and Chardonnay is crafted using French oak barrel fermentation with lees stirring. Its wines include The Discussion and the 2014 Napa Valley Merlot Three Palms Vineyard, which was named Wine Spectator's 2017 #1 Wine of the Year.
