Jean-Jacques Koch founded the Egon Müller - Scharzhof estate in 1797. After Koch died in 1829, the estate was divided among his seven children, and his daughter Elisabeth married Felix Müller. In 1900, the wines of Scharzhofberg and the Müller family were celebrated at the Paris Exposition Universelle et Internationale. In 1954, Egon Müller III bought the neighboring vineyard Le Gallais from Madame Rochon de Pons. From 1985 to 1991, Egon Müller III managed the Scharzhof alongside his son Egon. Some old vines are ungrafted on their original roots and date back to the 19th century, and all grapes are harvested by hand. Must rests for 24 hours after pressing before being racked into Fuder casks or stainless steel tanks. Fermentation is typically spontaneous and often halts naturally in the cool cellar. Heiner Bollig is the cellar master, and its wines include Scharzhofberg Riesling.
