Boxwood Estate proprietor John Kent Cooke, former owner and president of the NFL Washington Redskins, and his wife Rita purchased Boxwood Farm in Middleburg, Virginia in 2001 to establish a vineyard and winery. In 2002, Lucie Morton was hired to design a 16-acre vineyard, while Hugh Newell Jacobsen and Dr. Richard Vine were hired to design Boxwood Winery. The first vines were planted in 2004, and the winery was completed in 2005. In 2006, Stephane Derenoncourt agreed to consult for the winery. Stephen Rigby is the winemaker.

Located in the Middleburg Virginia AVA, the 26.5-acre sustainable vineyard features the tightest vine planting on the East Coast. Its ENTAV-certified vines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sauvignon Gris. Grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed, and hand sorted at the press pad. Whole berries are transferred by gravity to custom stainless steel fermentation tanks ranging from 575 to 1,750 gallons. Wine is bottled with a GAI bottling machine and finished exclusively with natural corks. Its wines include Reserve.
