G.D. Vajra Langhe Freisa Kyè 2019

Rare and enticing wine from the esteemed Freisa grape variety, native to the Piemonte region. A unique and dimensional wine with a decadent nose featuring dark fruits, earthy notes, and herbal undertones. The wine's soft touch is seamless by a range of black and red fruits, bringing tobacco, herbs, and leather, with firm tannins. Interestingly, Freisa is sometimes produced with a sparkling quality, but Kye from Vajra was not. Overall, a fascinating discovery that warrants further exploration. I look forward to trying more of this wine in the future.

The medium Fresia is elegantly silky after a period of 20-30 minutes of gentle handling. The distinctively Langhe region fruit profile is described by a seamless equilibrium of red and black fruit, bringing a zesty and lean experience.

High-end Freisa-based wine with a familiar yet powerful style, reminding of a young Barolo. The tannic backbone is robust, in contrast the nose is powered by by smoked meat, green stems, and campher. The mouthfeel is smooth, with a opulent fruit profile that includes deep cherry, blackberries, and a lead pencil note. The aftertaste is long and tannic, but ultimately feels overripe. A promising but potentially premature release.
