Schloss Johannisberg is a Riesling estate on the site of a Benedictine monastery founded in 1100. The monastery became an independent abbey in 1130 and consecrated its high altar to John the Baptist, giving rise to the name Johannisberg, meaning St. John’s hill. Construction of the palace began in 1716 to replace the monastery ruins.

In 1720, the entire domain was planted with Riesling, creating the world’s first closed Riesling vineyard. Its wines include Eiswein, first produced in 1858. In 1971, Schloss Johannisberg became an exclusive single vineyard under wine law.
