INTERESTING FACT

The late harvest wines (Spätlese) were discovered by accident. The legend of the Spätlesereiter goes back to the 18th century, when Johannisberg Castle belonged to the High Abbey of Fulda, which developed it into a model vineyard and the prince abbot reserved the right to decide when the grape harvest could begin. So it happened in 1775 that the monks at Johannisberg Castle sent a messenger with a sample of ripe grapes to Fulda at harvest time, as they did every year, to obtain the prince-bishop's permission to begin harvesting. Although the grapes were already ripe and all surrounding towns had long since granted permission to harvest on their estates, the messenger did not return and the longed-for permission initially failed to materialize.
