Hanzell Vineyards was founded in 1953 by Zellerbach, who named it after his wife Hana. Brad Webb was hired as first winemaker in 1956, and the first vintage was produced in 1957. Bob Sessions was hired as winemaker in 1973. Michael McNeill and Linda Hanson were hired as winemakers in 2008, and Jason Jardine was hired as president and director of winemaking in 2014.

Hanzell sits at the southern toe of the Mayacamas mountain range overlooking Sonoma Valley and San Pablo Bay. Vineyard blocks include the 4 1/2-acre Day planted to Chardonnay in 1972, the 13-acre de Brye planted in 1976, the 4-acre Sessions planted to Pinot Noir in 1999, and the 4 1/2-acre Ramos planted to Chardonnay in 2001. Implementation of Holistic Integrated Farming practices began in 2016, and the winery became Certified Organic through CCOF in 2021. Wines are fermented with native yeast, receive no added malolactic bacteria, are cross-flow filtered, vegan friendly, and bottled with Diam natural corks.
