Hans Fahden was founded in 1912 by Hans and Marie Fahden. When Prohibition was enacted in 1920, they switched to growing walnuts and prunes. Later, the winery was officially bonded in 1986, produced its first bottle of wine in 1987, and opened for public tastings in 1996. Winemaker David Sundberg joined in 2015.

The winery is nestled at 1200 feet in the Mayacamas Mountains in Napa Valley. Its three vineyard areas were planted between 1982 and 1984 and are separated by volcanic outcroppings and Douglas Fir forests, and the grapes grown are Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaking includes a wine cave tunneled into a formation of volcanic tufa, and the estate produces 1,500 cases of wine annually.
