Exhibiting a deep garnet hue, the Mayer Merlot opens with a bouquet of ripe black cherry and plum, interwoven with subtle notes of cedar and forest floor, indicative of its meticulous oak aging. The palate is plush and velvety, showcasing layers of dark chocolate and espresso, balanced by a firm yet integrated tannic structure. A backbone of vibrant acidity lends freshness, while hints of graphite and earth provide a complex, lingering finish. This Merlot exemplifies the varietal's potential for elegance and depth, standing as a benchmark for cool-climate expressions.

We are 50+ wine professionals (sommeliers, buyers, MW candidates) across the US, UK, France, Greece, Italy, and beyond. We review wines via blind tastings with a standardized rubric, using both 100-point and 5-star scales.

Mayer Merlot is crafted from grapes grown in the cool climate of the Yarra Valley, Australia, where the temperate conditions allow for a slow ripening process, enhancing the wine's complexity. The Merlot grapes are hand-harvested and undergo fermentation in open-top fermenters to maximize flavor extraction. A portion of the wine is aged in French oak barrels, adding subtle notes of vanilla and spice. This Merlot is designed to be medium-bodied with a focus on ripe plum and berry flavors, balanced by soft tannins and a smooth finish, making it approachable for immediate enjoyment.
