Schloss Gobelsburg

The estate of Schloss Gobelsburg was first documented in 1074 when Azzo de Gobatsburich, an ancestor of the Kuenringers, was cited as a witness in a deed of donation. In 1171, monks of Stift Zwettl received their first vineyards at Heiligenstein and Gaisberg, and Stift Zwettl purchased Schloss Gobelsburg in 1740. After a 1786 fire at the estate farm in Kammern, agricultural headquarters moved into Schloss Gobelsburg. Later, Father Bertrand Baumann assumed management in 1958 and progressively renovated the castle.

Vineyard holdings include Steinsetz, Hussen, and Sachsenberg, acquired in 1740. Grapes are harvested by hand into small stackable crates and gently pressed with a pneumatic press. Fermentation occurs cool, but not excessively cool, in stainless steel or oak depending on grape style and potential, and large and small barrels are made from Manhartsberg wood north of Langenlois. A cellar expansion between 2018 and 2020 added storage, office space, press house access, and a vaulted cellar, and its wines include single-vineyard bottlings and wines classified under the Kamptal DAC appellation.
