Santa Ema was founded in 1956 by Félix Pavone Arbea, whose father, Pedro Pavone Voglino, emigrated from Piedmont, Italy to the Maipo region in 1917. The 35-hectare Santa Ema estate was acquired in Isla de Maipo in 1931. Santa Ema made its first wine export in 1986 to Brazil. In 2000, the 53-hectare Fundo El Peral estate in Isla de Maipo was purchased, and in 2003, a modern winemaking facility was constructed at the El Peral winery. Vinos Santa Ema remains owned by the Pavone family.
