Bodegas Montecillo was founded in 1870 by Don Celestino Navajas Matute. In 1896, Alejandro Navajas, trained in Bordeaux, took charge of the winery alongside his brother Gregorio, adopting the Bordeaux winemaking method. Later, José Luis Navajas, grandson of Celestino and trained as an enologist in Burgundy, took charge of the winery and introduced winemaking techniques to the region, including cold vinification. The Osborne family acquired Bodegas Montecillo in 1973, and Mercedes García Rupérez is the winemaker and technical director.

The winery introduced Ganímede tanks and flextanks for singular wines, geolocation tracking, and ongoing barrel renewal. Underground cellars hold vintages dating to 1926, featuring Gran Reserva bottles stacked by hand without supports. Its wines include Gran Reserva Viña Monty 1975, which won a 40-wine blind tasting of Rioja and Bordeaux wines in Amsterdam on September 17, 1983.
On VinoVoss, Montecillo has 2 wines in stock: 1 red, 1 white. Their average rating is 3.6 out of 5 from 417 ratings.
