In 1974, Josh Jensen purchased a limestone land parcel on the slopes of Mt. Harlan and founded Calera in 1975. Calera's first wine was 1,000 cases of Zinfandel in 1975, followed by its first Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir in 1977 and first Mt. Harlan Chardonnay in 1978. Founder Josh Jensen passed away in 2022, and Mike Waller serves as winemaker.

Calera’s Mt. Harlan vineyards are the only vineyards in the 7,400-acre AVA, which Jensen worked to establish in 1990. Its first estate vineyards were Jensen, Reed, and Selleck; Mills, Ryan, and de Villiers followed. The Mt. Harlan vineyards were certified organic by CCOF in 2008. Farming uses beneficial insects, compost, and cover crops, with yields rarely exceeding two tons per acre. Grapes are harvested by hand. Winemaking uses a seven-tier gravity-flow winery, native yeasts, and whole cluster fermentations. Single vineyard wines age for 16 months in 60-gallon French oak barrels, with 30% new oak.
On VinoVoss, Calera has 5 wines in stock: 3 red, 2 white. Their average rating is 4.1 out of 5 from 169 ratings.
