Displaying a deep garnet hue, the Matthew Fritz Merlot opens with a bouquet of ripe black cherry and plum, intertwined with subtle notes of cedar and dark chocolate. On the palate, it reveals a medium-bodied structure with velvety tannins and a balanced acidity that enhances its fruit-forward profile. The wine's complexity is further accentuated by hints of clove and a whisper of graphite, leading to a lingering finish that is both smooth and satisfying. This Merlot exemplifies the approachable yet refined character typical of California's North Coast, offering both immediate appeal and potential for short-term aging.

We are 50+ wine professionals (sommeliers, buyers, MW candidates) across the US, UK, France, Greece, Italy, and beyond. We review wines via blind tastings with a standardized rubric, using both 100-point and 5-star scales.

Matthew Fritz Merlot is crafted from grapes sourced in California's North Coast, where the cool maritime climate fosters a balanced ripening process. This Merlot is fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve its fresh fruit character, followed by a period of aging in French oak barrels, which imparts subtle vanilla and spice notes. The wine offers a medium-bodied profile with ripe plum and cherry flavors, supported by a smooth texture and gentle tannins. Designed for immediate enjoyment, it pairs well with a variety of dishes, making it a versatile choice for casual dining.
