Nerello Mascalese is a red grape variety grown primarily on the Italian island of Sicily, on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. It is widely appreciated for its intense aromas and complex flavours, as well as its ability to produce wines of remarkable longevity.
Nerello Mascalese produces medium-bodied wines with a ruby red colour, and aromas of cherries and red berries, with subtle hints of spicy, habeceous, mineral and earthy notes. The taste profile is complex, with refreshing acidity and structured tannins.
Nerello Mascalese is primarily grown in the eastern part of Sicily, in particular in the Etna DOC zone, on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. It plays a dominant role as well in Faro DOC, near Etna area, in the northeast of Sicily. Nerello Mascalese is also found in smaller quantities in other parts of Sicily and the region of Calabria. Nerello Mascalese works well with the high altitude and the volcanic soil of Mount Etna, where it is trained in the traditional bush vine method called Alberello. As a late-ripening variety, the long growing season of high elevation vineyards allows Nerello Mascalese to develop complex flavors. In Etna area, it is often blended with its indegenous partner, Nerello Cappuccio. Nerello Mascalese wines are usually light to medium-bodied, with a good level of acidity and tannins. The wines of Etna DOC are known for their intense aromas and flavours, while those from Calabria are more aromatic and fruity. Nerello Mascalese wines are versatile and pair well with a variety of dishes, from light appetizers to rich main courses. They are particularly good with seafood dishes and tomato-based sauces.
The Nerello Mascalese grape variety is an offspring of Sangiovese.
