Pewsey Vale traces its origins to 1847, when Joseph Gilbert built a homestead in Eden Valley and planted the region's first grapevines shortly after arriving from England. He planted one acre of vines on land named after his home in the Vale of Pewsey in Wiltshire, UK. When Gilbert died in 1881, the vineyard covered 29 acres, and William retired in 1914. Geoffrey Angas Parsons bought the property in 1931. Wyndham Hill-Smith purchased the land in 1970, beginning the Hill-Smith family custodianship. Louisa Rose has made Pewsey Vale Vineyard wines since 1995 and serves as Head of Winemaking.

The vineyard sits at an altitude between 485 and 500 metres, 250 metres above the Barossa Valley floor. Subsequently added vines were propagated from material sourced from the 1961 Block. Pewsey Vale adopted biodynamic farming; the Contours block received formal organic certification in 2013, and the 2021 vintage release displayed the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia trust mark. The estate exclusively makes Riesling, does not use oak, and uses wild ferments. Its wines include Pewsey Vale Riesling.
