Millton is a wine estate near Manutuke, established in 1984 by James and Annie Millton. Before that, Annie’s father, John Clark, had developed vineyards on his estate at Opou in Manutuke during the late 1960s. James and Annie returned to Gisborne after gaining experience in France and Germany, including at Champagne Bollinger, Maison Sichel in Bordeaux and Weingut Kurstner in Rheinhessen.

The vineyard sits on the banks of the Te Arai River, and Millton is New Zealand’s first organic and biodynamic wine estate. Its wines include traditionally styled Riesling and Chenin Blanc, which won trophies and gold medals, and the 1992 Gisborne Chardonnay, which received gold medals at the International Wine Challenge in London.
