Founded in 1997 by winemaker Kevin Mitchell, Kilikanoon originated in South Australia’s Clare Valley. Mitchell was guided by his father, Mort Mitchell. Peter Warr is Chief Winemaker.

Vineyards include Mount Surmon in Stanley Flat, with 16.35 ha under vine planted to Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Gris, and Mort's Block in Leasingham, planted in 1973 by Mort Mitchell. Trillian’s Hill, established in 2001, has 24 hectares under vine growing Shiraz, Montepulciano, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Mataro. Farming methods utilize locally sourced straw mulch applied under the vines for water retention and soil biology, while winery solids mixed with composted cow manure serve as organic fertilizer. Kilikanoon is a certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, and a 99 kW solar plant on the winery roof generates about 30% of business energy requirements.
