WINE DESCRIPTION

Martinez Gassiot's Quinta da Eira Velha is a Single Quinta (estate) Vintage Port made from a blend of indigenous Port varieties like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Touriga Cao and Tinta Roriz. This mountainous region is marked by hot, dry summers producing grapes with ripe, jammy fruit and high sugar levels. After harvesting, the grapes are quickly crushed with a focus on heavy extraction to create deeply colored and highly tannic wines. Grapes spirit is added during the fermentation which means residual sugar is left in the wine. The sweet, fortified wine is then aged for two years in neutral oak prior to being bottled.

This Martinez Gassiot Quinta da Eira Velha Single Quinta Vintage Port is a deep, dark ruby in the glass, with a nose of jammy berries, dark chocolate, and dried figs.On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intense, with powerfully concentrated flavors of ripe blackcurrant, blackberries, sweet cherries, and violets. The tannins are assertive and muscular, providing framework to the luscious, syrupy, dark fruit and the high alcohol offers a pleasant and warming sensation on the long finish.

Region: Douro

The Douro Valley in Portugal is one of the oldest and most iconic wine regions in the world. Located in the north of the country, the region is renowned for its stunning scenery and its production of world-class fortified wines. The Douro Valley was first demarcated in 1756 and originally applied only to port production. It was extended to include table wine in 1979, with the first glimmer of the region’s potential for non-fortified still red wines appearing when port shippers Casa Ferreirinha launched Barca Velha in 1952. The focus on table wines did not take hold until the 1990’s, following Portugal’s accession to the EU.
