I embarked on a journey to the south west of France, specifically to Cahors, where I discovered a bold blend of Madiran, with the possibility of Malbec or Tannat. A 100-year-old Spanish Monastrell stood out, but its bright notes was a surprise. The nose was defined by by the sweet, spicy aromas of chocolate and baking spices. The tongue was defined by a medium-high acidity, a slightly grumpy tannin profile, and a medium-long finish. The blind tasting was a humbling experience, as I was forced to rely on my senses alone. However, I was pleased to receive a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars, which was a smooth surprise. 😊👍

Rich, full-bodied wine with a deep, inky color. The label, as eye-catching, is somewhat unimpressive. The nose is described by a youthful, energetic aroma with suggestions of black currant, inky plums, green pepper, and tomato stalks. On the palate, the wine reveals a textured flavor profile with rich fruits, cocoa, and a whisper of spice. Overall, a well-balanced and fulfilling wine that pairs well with a variety of dishes, with a homemade lasagna.

This full-bodied Monastrell from Jumilla offers rich dark fruit flavors of plum, blackberry, and cherry with notes of chocolate, oak, and spice. While praised for its robust structure and smooth finish, some find tannins occasionally overpowering. Reviews highlight its good balance despite high alcohol content (14% ABV), with descriptors ranging from 'velvety texture' to 'grumpy tannins'. Quality varies by vintage, with the 2016 and 2018 vintages particularly noted for depth.
This Monastrell from Jumilla presents a deep garnet hue, revealing its robust character. The nose is an intricate tapestry of ripe blackberries, dark plums, and a hint of Mediterranean herbs, underscored by a subtle minerality. On the palate, it is full-bodied and well-structured, with velvety tannins and a vibrant acidity that elevates the wine's rich fruit core. The finish is long and layered, with nuances of dark chocolate and a whisper of dried fig. This wine exemplifies the bold, sun-kissed style of the region, offering both immediate pleasure and potential for short-term aging.
