Wine Description:
50° Degree Riesling is a dry syle of Riesling and the entry level offering from an historic Rheingau producer, Schloss Johannisberg. The fruit is picked early to maintain freshness and a lime and apple fruit profile. The fermentation is slow and cool to retain as much youthful fruit flavor as possible. The wine is unadorned with oak and release early for immediate drinking. It vibrant freshness makes it a great glass of wine on its own whilst the smallest of traces of residual sweetness make the wine well suited to spciy dishes like Thai and Indian.

Wine Expert Note:

The pale green colour gives way to an aromatic nose of lime blossom, green apple and lemon. The palate is dry on account of the vibrant acidity, with a crisp texture light body and a subtle slatey mineral finish. This is a versatile, and lower alcohol, wine to keep in the fridge door for mid-week drinking with a range of dishes. Drink within 5 years.

The wine is made from Riesling grapes grown in the steep, slate vineyards of the Dhron river valley, which impart a unique minerality to the wine. The winemaking process involves careful selection of the grapes, gentle pressing, and fermentation with natural yeasts to preserve the purity of the fruit. This exclusive vineyard, registered as a Grand Cru and covering a total of four hectares, exclusively produces the GG from just one hectare of its oldest vines. Although the predominant soil composition is colored sandstone, the specific section contributing to the GG showcases a substantial presence of pure rock. Helmut Dönnhoff had hinted at the potential for a Grand Cru in the Höllenpfad site many years ago, and this vision has materialized in recent years. The sandstone hill yields small, thick-skinned berries with an iron-infused spiciness. The resulting wine, though displaying a slightly wilder and more robust profile, presents intense and lively notes of grapefruit, orange peel, and mandarin. It exhibits a ripeness, density, and creaminess compared to the Höllenpfad Erste Lage, yet it exudes even more dramatic intensity and playfulness. With an impressive intensity, the wine orchestrates a symphony of flavors, vibrating with a gripping, salty expressiveness in its enduring finish. Layers of salt, herbs, warm red citrus fruit, and rock unfold, featuring nuances of blackcurrant, lilac, a hint of nutmeg, and delicate lychee. In its style, reminiscent of Erdener Prälat, this wine stands as a marvel of harmony, seamlessly blending a velvety texture with compelling minerality, offering a simultaneously captivating and exhilarating experience on the palate. The mouthfeel is impactful, delivering saltiness, pressure, and acidity.
