Algarve has a long history of winemaking, with evidence of viticulture dating back to the Roman era. The region was an important producer of fortified wines during the Age of Exploration, and its wines were exported to many parts of the world. In the 19th century, Algarve was one of the first Portuguese wine regions to adopt modern winemaking techniques.

Algarve is using the local Castelão and Negra Mole for the reds and Arinto and Síria for the whites. Although, international varieties such the famous Syrah have successfully adapted to Algarve terroirs being used by many local wineries. The region also produces fortified wines.

INTERESTING FACT

The popular British singer Sir Cliff Richard has helped put the Algarve on the wine map by planting a vineyard and building a winery near the resort of Albufeira.
