Wine and Ice - A Legal Combo?

Three wine recommendations to enjoy with ice!

It's summer 2024 and putting an ice cube in your glass of wine will most certainly get people staring. Wine people can sometimes look into things like black and white. But don't let elitism stop you from enjoying wine the way you want! At VinoVoss we believe in the fun side of wine, so we prepared a guide on the best wines to enjoy with ice!

Ruby Port

Forget Port wine by the fireplace at Christmas, and start sipping this delicious flavourful wine by the pool with some ice cubes. Ruby Port is intentionally made as this rich and concentrated wine, so any dilution caused by the ice won't make the wine any less delicious. Instead, it will add much-needed freshness for the summer months!

Sweet Fortified Muscat

If you're more into white wines, try the insane world of sweet fortified Muscat wines. This style, often called VDN, is more common in Spain, the South of France, and Greece. These wines offer delicious aromas and a round, sweet palate that becomes more delicate and enjoyable with some ice! If you're feeling adventurous, you can use sparkling wine or soda to make your own alternative Spritz!

Sparkling wine

Recently, many sparkling wine producers have released sparkling wine blends specifically curated to be served with ice. It's easy to recognize them since they often write “Ice” on the label. These wines have more intense aromas than your traditional sparkling wine, and a softer palate, frequently accompanied by a bit more residual sugar. Even though they're still light and delicate sparkling wine, this combination allows them to be served with ice without losing their quality and appeal!

If you're still uncertain, just give it a try! I swear, putting ice in your wine is not a crime. If it makes wine taste better for you, then go for it. Choose wines that are flavorful and concentrated, perhaps a bit sweet, and discover a whole new way to enjoy wine!
