Rión is a local variety of grape recently recovered from an old vineyard near Barcelona
Rión is a white variety. The wine is pale with lots of citrus and hint of wet stone note. It has a lot of similarities to Sancerre and Riesling.
Rión is mainly found in Barcelona, Spain. Rión is a relatively low-yielding variety and requires careful manipulation in the vineyard to achieve optimal ripeness and flavour. The wines produced from it are usually barrel-aged, with some producers also blending it with other varieties. Rión is mid-season budding and ripening and has good disease resistance. Due to its ability to produce high quality wine, the variety is now being cultivated commercially on a small scale. The minerally and citrusy qualities of a Rión wine make it a great accompaniment to fish and seafood dishes.
Rión was a part of an experimental project started just before 2000 in Barcelona.
