Mourisco is an ancient Iberian grape variety that is mainly used in blend to produce light red wine.
Mourisco (also known as Marufo) is a small, round, blue-black grape that produces light ruby colour red wine with fresh mild strawberries aromas.
Mourisco is mainly grown in the Iberian region in Portugal and Spain. and France. Mourisco is a vigorous and relatively productive grape variety. It has thick skinned, large sized berries in large bunches. Due to its light colour and structure, the wine is more suitted to be made into rosé than to red wines . Mourisco produces some of the most highly acclaimed wines in Portugal, with some of the best examples coming from the Douro region. In Spain, mostly in Castilla-La Mancha, the grape is usually blended with other grapes to produce still red wines. Mourisco wines are best enjoyed with hearty, flavourful dishes such as slow-cooked stews, roasted meats, and game.
Mourisco is believed to have been named after the Mouriscos, the people of Moorish descent who lived in the Douro region during the 16th century.
