Frappato is a light-bodied Sicilian red grape variety that is known for its bright ruby colour and unique aromas and flavours. It is grown mainly in Sicily, though some plantings are found in Puglia and Calabria.
Frappato has a ruby colour with a hint of purple. Its aromas are fresh and fruity, with notes of strawberry, raspberry, violet and dried herbs. On the palate, it is light-bodied with balanced acidity, low tannins and flavours of dried cherry, raspberry and strawberry.
Frappato is mainly grown in Sicily, particularly in the province of Ragusa. There are also plantings of the grape in Puglia and Calabria. Frappato is a vigorous variety that thrive in hot and dry regions. The light body and soft tannins balance with the rich and powerful characteristics of its blending partner Nero d'Avola. In Sicily, Frappato is often blended with Nero d'Avola to create a light-bodied and fruity red wine. In the Vittoria DOC, Frappato is a key component of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, along with the Sicily's most iconic red grape, Nero d'Avola. The wines are fresh and fruity, with a light body, low tannins and bright acidity. In recent years, some winemakers use Frappato to make high quality single varietal wines. Frappato wines are best paired with light dishes such as seafood, salads, roasted vegetables and grilled white meats.
Frappato is a sibling of the Calabrian variety Gaglioppo.
