Wine Description:
The Cuilleron family has a rich winemaking heritage spanning three generations. It all began with their grandfather in 1920, followed by Uncle Antoine, who assumed control in 1960. Yves Cuilleron, at the age of 26, continued the legacy by establishing himself in Verlieu and taking over the estate in 1987. Over the years, the domaine significantly expanded from its initial 3.5 hectares in Condrieu and Saint-Joseph to an impressive 59 hectares, encompassing renowned appellations throughout the northern Rhône Valley. Seven hectares of these vineyards lie in the Côte-Rôtie appellation, characterized by a uniform granitic terroir on the right bank of the Rhône River. Yves Cuilleron's approach to winemaking rejects passing trends, as he neither adheres to conventional nor biodynamic methods. Instead, he follows his unique philosophy, with a simple goal: cultivating the finest grapes possible. All vineyard tasks, from pruning to harvest, are meticulously performed by hand, free from herbicides and exclusively relying on organic fertilizers. The wines undergo aging exclusively in barrels, with white wines maturing for nine months and red wines up to eighteen months.

Wine Expert Note:

Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie Bassenon is crafted by Yves Cuilleron, a renowned winemaker known for his commitment to quality and expression of terroir. On the nose, it offers an enticing bouquet of black fruits, such as blackberry and black cherry, accompanied by subtle floral notes of violet and a touch of spice. These aromas are further enhanced by the gentle influence of oak, which adds complexity and depth. On the palate, Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie Bassenon presents a harmonious balance between fruit, acidity, and tannins. The black fruit flavors observed on the nose are beautifully translated onto the palate, accompanied by additional layers of dark chocolate, black pepper, and a hint of smoked meat. The wine's medium to full body provides a satisfying mouthfeel, while its well-integrated tannins contribute to a smooth and elegant finish. This Côte-Rôtie wine is a testament to Yves Cuilleron's expertise and dedication to producing exceptional wines. It can be enjoyed now, but also has the potential to age gracefully, allowing its flavors to evolve and develop further complexity over time. Pair it with grilled meats, game dishes, or hearty stews to fully appreciate its richness and depth.

Aurélien Chatagnier, a rising star in the Northern Rhône, founded his domaine in 2002 at a young age. Inspired by early vineyard work at Domaine Jamet and mentored by François Villard, he now oversees nearly 10 hectares, mainly on steep granite soils, practicing organic farming since 2019. His ecological commitment extends to building stone walls to prevent erosion. In his 17th-century farmhouse cellar, he employs native yeast for vinification. The reds, destemmed and fermented in fiberglass tanks, age in used barrels, while whites ferment in barrels. Aurelien's lean, pure winemaking style showcases why he's considered one of the region's best young talents.
