WINE DESCRIPTION
Tablas Creek's venture into Tannat began unexpectedly when, in 1990, the Perrins' French nurseryman included Tannat cuttings along with requested Rhone varieties. Initially a mystery, the nurseryman's foresight proved crucial. When the Tannat cuttings were declared virus-free in 1993, Tablas Creek planted just under an acre. Tannat, an easy-to-cultivate varietal, thrives in Paso Robles' climate. Its thick-skinned berries resist mildew and botrytis, ripening ideally by late September or early October. While Tannat's thick stems pose a challenge during harvest, the grape's tannic nature benefits from open-top tank fermentation and aging in small barrels. Tablas Creek's dedication to Tannat is evident in their 3.5 acres, producing an average of 10 tons annually since 2002.
