The small DOCG Montalbano lies in the northwest of the Chianti wine region, named after a 500-meter-high mountain at whose base sit the vineyards of four wineries totaling 318 hectares. The bishops of nearby Pistoia appreciated the high quality of Montalbano wines over 700 years ago. Every Chianti is DOCG, yet each has a distinct character influenced by its terroir and production methods. The grape blend includes Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Malvasia del Chianti. The Tuscan arch cultivation method benefits from the porous marlstone soil, preventing waterlogging.
