The first vineyards in Michigan were planted in the early 1800s by French settlers. The state's wine industry grew steadily until Prohibition in the 1920s, when it was almost completely wiped out. After Prohibition, the industry slowly began to rebuild, and by the 1970s, there were over 100 wineries in the state. Today, Michigan is home to over 200 wineries, making it the sixth-largest wine-producing state in the US.
