WINE DESCRIPTION

Romariz Vintage Port is a hugely age-worthy, fortified wine produced by Romariz that are produced by Taylor's, located in the Douro Valley region of Portugal. The grapes used to make this wine are sourced from only the highest rated vineyards in the region, which are known for their steep slopes and schist soil. After harvesting, the grapes undergo a heavy extraction to create deeply colored and highly tannic wines. Grapes spirit is added to halt the fermentation to leave residual sugar in the wine. The sweet, fortified wine is then aged for two years in neutral oak prior to being bottled.

This Romariz Vintage Port displays an inky, almost impenetrably dark purple hue that stains the glass.Aromatically complex and opulent, the nose positively explodes from the glass with a captivating array of ripe and jammy dark fruits, dried figs, sweet spices and violets. On the palate, this robust port is full-bodied and rich, yet smooth, with layers of dark berry and plum flavors, tobacco and leather notes. The sweetness is perfectly balanced by the acidity, whilst the high alcohol is pleasantly warming on the bold, hugely persistent finish.

The Douro Valley in Portugal is one of the oldest and most iconic wine regions in the world. Located in the north of the country, the region is renowned for its stunning scenery and its production of world-class fortified wines. The Douro Valley was first demarcated in 1756 and originally applied only to port production. It was extended to include table wine in 1979, with the first glimmer of the region’s potential for non-fortified still red wines appearing when port shippers Casa Ferreirinha launched Barca Velha in 1952. The focus on table wines did not take hold until the 1990’s, following Portugal’s accession to the EU.
