With his rugged beard and dark attire, Raul Perez might resemble a biker, yet he’s one of Northern Spain’s most influential winemakers. For him, understanding the vineyard’s ecosystem is the essence of crafting great wines. His hometown, Valtuille in Bierzo, holds exceptional terroirs, once known only to insiders. In 2003, after working with his family’s winery, Perez launched his own project, Ultreia—a nod to the pilgrim’s greeting on the Camino de Santiago. Ultreia now represents Bierzo’s finest Mencia wines and Perez’s adventurous spirit in winemaking.
