WINE DESCRIPTION

Founded in 1757 by royal decree, Quinta do Côtto spans 70 hectares of vineyards noted in early Douro wine culture documents. The estate's manor, an 18th-century construction atop a 15th and 16th-century foundation, exudes historical significance. In 1960, the Montez Champalimaud family expanded beyond Port wines, pioneering red wines from Douro's traditional grape varieties—a pivotal moment for the region's wine production. Today, connoisseurs cherish old vintages, especially those from 1992. Since 2017, Miguel Mendia Montez Champalimaud has helmed Quinta do Côtto, deeply rooted in the estate's history, having grown up amidst its vineyards and Paço de Teixeiró estate.

Region: Douro

The Douro Valley in Portugal is one of the oldest and most iconic wine regions in the world. Located in the north of the country, the region is renowned for its stunning scenery and its production of world-class fortified wines. The Douro Valley was first demarcated in 1756 and originally applied only to port production. It was extended to include table wine in 1979, with the first glimmer of the region’s potential for non-fortified still red wines appearing when port shippers Casa Ferreirinha launched Barca Velha in 1952. The focus on table wines did not take hold until the 1990’s, following Portugal’s accession to the EU.
