Twenty-six years ago, a Zinfandel from Amador County’s historic Massoni Ranch marked the launch of a winemaking journey. Known for its heritage, the vineyard includes sections planted in the 1890s and predominantly in the 1920s and 1930s. These "old vines," dry-farmed and head-trained with traditional 8x8 spacing, produce classic Zinfandel grapes with exceptional character. Drawing on experience from Amador, Napa, and the Central Coast, the winemaker's goal has remained steadfast: crafting a balanced Zinfandel with vibrant color, distinctive aromas, rich flavors, and moderated alcohol. First released in 1997, the “Z” Zinfandel continues to embody this timeless approach today.
NOTES FROM VINOVOSS SOMMELIER
The Jeff Runquist Z Zinfandel from Massoni Ranch Vineyard is a remarkable wine with the best qualities of the Zinfandel grape. With its deep ruby color and medium to full body, this wine is visually appealing and has a rich texture on the palate.
On the nose, you can expect a bouquet of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and hints of spice. These aromas are complemented by subtle notes of vanilla and oak, which add complexity to the wine.
The palate is where this Zinfandel truly shines. It offers a burst of juicy blackberry and raspberry flavors, accompanied by a touch of black pepper and baking spices. The tannins are well-integrated, providing a smooth and velvety mouthfeel. The wine finishes with a lingering, satisfying finish.
The Sierra Foothills wine region is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, USA.
The discovery of gold near Sutter Mill in 1848 led to the California Gold Rush, resulting in many settlers from Southern Europe who established vineyards to supply them with wine. By the 1860s, the Sierra Foothills wine industry was booming before the depression and Prohibition reduced the industry to just a few vineyards.
