Henschke Johann's Garden

Henschke Johann's Garden is a special wine paying tribute to the early Barossa Lutheran pioneers who played a vital role in the region's winemaking history. These pioneers, many of whom were named Johann, contributed to the rich heritage and traditions of Barossa winemaking. The wine's name reflects the reference to vineyards as gardens, as was customary in the German tradition, with "Weingarten" meaning wine garden. This unique blend is a testament to the enduring traditions and culture of the Barossa region. It is crafted from a combination of Grenache and Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre) grapes, sourced from multiple vineyards across the Barossa Valley. The vines are old, low-yielding, and grown on limestone soils, imparting character to the wine. The winemaking process is rooted in heritage, with the grapes being vinified separately and matured in seasoned French hogsheads for 9 months. This approach ensures the preservation of the unique flavors of each varietal. The wine boasts extraordinary flavors, fruit purity, and balanced acidity, with excellent aging potential. Henschke Johann's Garden 2019 features a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mataro, and it's aged in traditional open-top concrete fermentation tanks. The wine goes through full malolactic fermentation and is fined without the use of animal-based fining agents, making it suitable for vegans. With a history dating back to the first vintage in 1996 and vines with an average age of 80 years, this wine embodies the essence of Barossa's winemaking tradition, heritage, and excellence.
