It is home to a burgeoning wine industry, with a long history of viticulture and a bright future ahead. Illinois has a long history of winemaking, with the first vines planted in the early 1800s. The industry grew steadily until Prohibition in the 1920s, when it was almost completely wiped out. After Prohibition, the industry slowly began to rebuild, and today there are over 100 wineries in the state.
